The business of sustaining and growing a music therapy program is essential. This presentation will address the benefits of research, staff collaboration and education, outcome-specific data and community outreach. These strategies promote the field of music therapy, increase patient satisfaction, demonstrate cost effectiveness and endorse the institutional brand. DVD segments will highlight music therapy at the bedside and participants will engage in practical music therapy interventions useful for their personal and professional growth.
The Music Therapy Program through the University Hospitals of Cleveland was established in 1984 with a $2000 grant to study "The Therapeutic Effects of Music on Oncology Patients" for four hours a week. Within six months the responses of the patients and staff led to a full-time position. The program currently has five full-time music therapists and 2 MT interns. Nearly 70 MT interns have trained and served the University Hospitals Health System. Music therapy is integrated into the majority of hospital departments including the operating room, inpatient, outpatient, mood disorders unit, rehabilitation, OB-Gyn, Pediatrics, oncology, and palliative care.
